Achieving Live Data in the Oracle Cloud
If you’re like most people shifting to a cloud strategy, your learning curve is steep, and even the basics such as migrating data to the cloud are worrisome. Whether megabytes or petabytes, you need your cloud migration to be an efficient process - continuous, requiring no downtime, and seamless without data loss. The long delays inherent with traditional migration methods, the need for coordinated ingestion across multiple environments and various geolocations, stale, vulnerable, or inconsistent data often leave projects stuck in the starting gate. Even worse, when your business’s data is driving competitive advantage, unless you can be sure of the availability of your data, you and your business are at serious risk. Now it is possible to have guaranteed consistent data everywhere, even when data is growing and changing. This presentation will explain ‘LIVE DATA’. And present architecture and solutions that show how a ‘LIVE DATA strategy’ allows you to surmount common and sometimes scary cloud use-cases across a wide variety of industry scenarios.

Path to Data Architect: Hadoop, Spark, Flink, and Beam Explained to Oracle DBAs
Big Data is growing exponentially, requiring massive-scale infrastructure however, business analytics has shifted from reactive to proactive analysis; this is the era of streaming data (a.k.a. Fast Data). Apache Hadoop is very good for analyzing data at rest but cannot handle streaming data.
Big Data analytics needs new Big data frameworks. Apache Spark brings in-memory processing and RDD data abstraction which allow real-time processing of streaming data however its micro batch architecture incurs high latency. Apache Flink brings low latency and could address Spark limitations however it is not as mature and largely adopted as Spark.
Apache Beam promotes its portable Beam model across Big data frameworks (Spark, Flink, Dataflow).
Tis session presents and overview of the major Big Data frameworks and suggests that DBA should embrace these frameworks and expand their skills as a necessary path to becoming Data Architects.

Turning Relational Database Tables into Spark Data Sources
Big Data Analytics requires unstructured data (a.k.a. Big Data) but also Master data generally stored in RDBMS tables.

Apache Spark furnishes the Spark SQL interface for querying unstructured data using SQL. This interface provisions the Datasource API with a JDBC interface for accessing relational databases. How to join RDBMS tables with Big data using Spark SQL without moving data over?

This session describes an implementation of the Spark Datasource API and explains the optimizations that (i) allow parallel and direct access to the RDBMS database (with the option of controlling the number of concurrent connections); (ii) introspect the RDBMS table, generate partitions of Spark JDBCRDDs based on the split pattern and rewrite Spark SQL queries into the RDBMS SQL; (iii) use hooks in the JDBC driver for faster type conversions; (iv) push down predicates to the RDBMS, prune partitions based on the where clause to reduce the amount of data returned to the RDBMS.

Autonomous Data Warehouse Cloud - Experiences of an Early Adopter
In the Cloud managed Data Warehouse services are still rare. Amazon Red Shift and Snowflake are examples of new contenders in the market place. At Oracle Open World Larry Ellison announced the Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse Cloud service (ADWC). It shall become available at the turn of the calendar year as a fully managed DWH service, running on Exadata hardware.

sumIT took part in a preview programme in summer and autumn of 2017 and has gained insights and experience with the new service. In this presentation those experiences will be shared with the audience. Key features of the service, like its ease of provisioning, use, and interfacing other systems and clouds will be presented and also demonstrated.

Lessons learned will be told, the services sweet spot and limits be discussed. Moreover, AWDC will be compared to other managed DWH cloud services. This will illustrate the advantages AWDC gives customers, but will also help identify room for improvement in future AWDC versions.

Architecting for Analytics
This session answers architecture questions related to the overall structure and strategy for an enterprise analytics system. How do we design a data warehouse for analytics purposes? What do we integrate into a central warehouse or maintain in separate data marts? How do we integrate long term storage systems that we need to query only occasionally? Data lakes? Big Data?? What are the tradeoffs with different tools and how much do we invest in custom code? How do we integrate real-time data streaming? What ETL and integration strategies are we going to use? Where and how do we extend our raw data with calculated measures and analytic functions? How do we create a system that has a strong foundation, but can grow and evolve over time? This presentation will draw from real-world data architecture projects that were designed with analytics in mind.

Sneak Preview: Graph Cloud Services and Spatial Console for Database Cloud
Cloud services change the way we provision, deploy and perform analytic application development. They can simplify the development and deployment experience and make it possible for developers and data scientists to use analytics in which they had little or no expertise.

Two new planned cloud services from Oracle for spatial and graph analysis offer low-code and no-code capabilities. The spatial cloud services include no-code spatial analysis, automated geo-enrichment of data, visual map analysis, and simplified spatial application creation for analysts and developers. The graph cloud services provide an analyst and developer studio with dozens of prebuilt, low-code graph algorithms with wizards to automate modeling, loading, and visualizing graph data and analysis results.

These mapping and graph analysis services offer over hundreds of geospatial and graph analysis functions.  Data access will be available through rich APIs, along with SQL-based spatial and graph query languages.

A Practical Business Approach to Implementing Oracle Analytics Cloud
Implementing and Oracle Business Intelligence (BI) ecosystem can be a challenge. When successfully implemented they can deliver significant business value. However, may BI implementations fail because they are long, complex and ultimately do not meet the business's needs. We discuss an approach for reducing technical complexity and ensuring business needs drive the implementation of the solution. Using the Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) offers the organizations a robust platform for implementation a business intelligence ecosystem and accelerates the solution cycle.

This presentation looks to provide relevant information to anyone looking to implement a Cloud based Oracle BI ecosystem to support organizational business processes. Initially we will conduct a cost benefit comparison of on premise verses cloud based solutions. Also, this presentation will provide a overview of the Oracle Analytics Cloud features and functionality. Then we will review a full life cycle methodology.

The Journey to the Clouds!
One of the biggest ongoing discussion points, and in fact a key decision factor to be bedded down prior to implementing a BI, Analytics application is whether it should be implemented as an on premises system, or as a cloud solution. We have come fairly quickly from a place where we had hardware on raised pallets in dark corners of basement floors. By contrast, we are now in the place where as far as possible, the business attempts to give the individual user access to self-served information on their personal device, at any time. The analogy I often use for this is one where my Grandfather one day clung to one end of a firmly planted Tulip and said to me; “ Look how strong I am, I have the world on the other end of this!” The internet used to be the domain of the few, and now it is almost impossible for an individual to function without it. In this discussion I will cover some fairly weighty topics, but in plain ‘ol English! This discussion is for Senior Executives in Finance or IT.

MSET Plus Situation Awareness for Big Data Healthcare Prognostic Applications
Situation Awareness (SA) is arguably the best method to extract the highest value from data;  Oracle's KIDS (Knowledge Intensive Data-management Services) is a particularly efficient model for achieving SA.  The Multivariate State Estimation Technique (MSET) is an advanced prognostic pattern recognition method that was originally developed in the 1990's for high-sensitivity prognostic applications in complex safety-critical industries by discovering anomalies with the provably lowest-possible false positives/negatives, and with low resource consumption.  Oracle's new MSET-2 combined with SA solves issues that confuse humans in the loop, and confound the best conventional ML algorithmics. The combination of Oracle MSET-2 and SA achieves a compelling value proposition for Big Data life sciences and healthcare applications, as well as for newly emerging dense-sensor IoT applications and human-in-the-loop supervisory-control applications.

Powerful Spatial Features You Never Knew Existed in Oracle Spatial and Graph
Even expert users may not know some of the powerful functions available in Oracle Spatial and Graph, or how to optimize common spatial requirements. I often find myself working with customers that implement spatial requirements the way they had to with other spatial solutions, instead of the best way they can by leveraging powerful unique capabilities available in Oracle Spatial and Graph. Many times the reason is "I didn't know that existed". This session will cover how Oracle Spatial and Graph natively integrates with key Oracle Database features such as transparent data encryption (TDE), redaction, partitioning (all types), and also powerful nearest neighbor strategies, new spatial functions introduced in 12c, as well as an overview of spatial functions you never knew existed. Customer use cases and code examples will be included. Feeding a Hungry World: Using Oracle Products to Ensure Global Food Security
The International Production Assessment Division (IPAD) of the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service predicts two of the leading economic indicators: Global Agricultural Output and US Agricultural Output.
The Division uses a convergence of evidence approach that incorporates observation and ground truth but is also heavily dependent on remotely sensed satellite (raster) data.
IPAD’s approach has been to unpack rasters and store them as vectors in database rows and columns and then to create derivative products. Decades of product development were built on this model.
Vectorizing rasters is slow and wasteful. With pixel sizes decreasing from 25 km to 10 km for IPAD's main data streams in 2018, data size and CPU usage are expected to grow by a factor of 2.5.
IPAD will stop preparing rolled up answers to questions that may never be asked. This presentation will focus on the use of Oracle technologies including the native SDO_GEORASTER type, Columnar In Memory, and the Exadata.

Accelerating Joins and Aggregations on the Oracle In-Memory Database
Analytic workloads are dominated by joins, aggregations, and scans. In-Memory columnar databases have optimized scans using compressed data formats and SIMD vectorization techniques, but have made little impact to the rest of the query execution plan. The Oracle Database In-Memory (DBIM) Option introduced new SQL execution operators that accelerate analytic queries by optimizing aggregation over joins for star schemas. Group-by expressions are pushed down into the scans of dimension tables, creating a unique key per distinct group called a Dense Grouping Key (DGK). A Key Vector is allocated that maps join keys to DGKs, which is used to filter non-matching rows during the fact table scan. Passing rows are then aggregated directly on compressed codes into DGK-indexed result buffers using SIMD. Our solution replaces traditional join and group-by processing (bloom filters, hash table build/probe, etc) with blazing fast inlined scan operators, improving query elapsed time by as much as 10X.

3D Spatial Utility Database at CALTRANS
The California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) was awarded a federal grant to create a spatial database for the purpose of collecting utility data and locations. Oracle 12c was chosen as the spatial database software and Bentley Map Enterprise V8i (SELECTseries4) was chosen as the software to interface with Oracle 12c. Autodesk Civil 3D and Arc GIS will eventually link to the database.
The multitenant architecture of Oracle 12c is being utilized; pluggable databases were created to separate data by CA Coordinate Systems (CCS). Within the pluggable database, tablespaces were created to separate the CCS zones.
It is essential that 3D geometry is stored and the Spatial Reference System Identifier (SRID) value be assigned to the Oracle geometry so that coordinates can be re-projected from one coordinate system to another. Compound Coordinate Systems were created.
Creating and maintaining a utility database with a standardized set of data attributes will ensure that the utility infrastructure can be accurately identified during project planning and for conflict resolution during design and construction. This system can easily be adapted to other disciplines.

Forecasting the storm recovery resource allocation in electric utility network
A leading cause of power outages in the US is weather driven equipment failure events. Oracle utility customers are seeking machine learning techniques (recommended by the USDOE) to improve real-time risk assessment for critical assets based upon incoming weather forecast. Given an accurate prediction for the location, type, and amount of the storm-damaged equipment, the utility company can position the right number of specialized crews and material resources ahead of time. We develop a novel machine-learning model trained on the history of asset failures and reported weather. Since the weather-reporting stations might be far from the assets and some weather data measurements might be missing, we interpolate the weather conditions at the asset locations using a triangularization function computed with a barycentric coordinates technique implementation. We report performance comparison of multiple machine learning models to recommend the best damage prediction tool.

Bringing your Data Warehouse to the the Lake
As early as 2001 Enterprise Data Warehousing (EDW) design patterns like "Corporate Information Factory" (CIF) began to emerge. Theses patterns established EDW as the central focus of reporting. Current BI/DW 1.0 projects still follow these patterns today. Problems in the BI/DW 1.0 methodology have appeared. Increases in data volume, variety and velocity have all created considerable challenges for this legacy architecture. In this presentation we will review the legacy of BI/DW 1.0 and dive into the future BI/DW 2.0 and 3.0 architectures. Taking a close look and advanced staging areas, operational data stores and how those architectures can be used for cloud facilitation in BI/DW 2.0. Additionally, this presentation will drive into the BI/DW 3.0 data tipping point and where various Oracle products fit in these new emerging modern data architectures.

Analyze the Global Knowledge Graph with Visualization, Cloud, & Spatial Tech
Every 15 minutes the world’s news is captured into the Global Knowledge Graph. The data set contains nearly a trillion sentiment snapshots and more than 1.5 billion location references.
Oracle ingested the data set on the Bare Metal Cloud to create a data warehouse. The project was designed to meet the needs of big data users, such as cyber threat and defense intelligence analysts. They require analysis of the connections between people, places, events, content and sentiment embedded in traditional data sources. They also need a pipeline and robust visualizations to filter the data, carve out relevant subsets and save the results to a property graph database for further analysis.
This session will describe the challenges, complexities, and technologies used to create a 35TB data warehouse, and filter, visualize, analyze and write results back, with a single click, to the Oracle Spatial and Graph database using Tom Sawyer Perspectives.

Serverless Computing for Machine Learning
Serverless architecture (or function as a service, FaaS) is THE new trend in the cloud. It’s an often used, highly efficient, well established technology and common building block in all major public clouds. Did I mention it typically saves 2 orders of magnitude of IT spending?
This session is about technology and clouds first of all. You don’t have to be an expert to attend it. It brings you up to date and gives an overview of serverless computing technology, Function as a Service and the Fn Project which was open sourced recently at Java One 2017.
Fn Project is the Oracle driven, open source FaaS framework with Docker as the only dependency. Fn Project can run on premises as well as in all clouds and allow interesting use cases for Machine Learning / AI.

Follow the Money: A Graph Model for Monitoring Bank Transactions
Examining the flow of bank transactions is key to analyzing financial operations such as fraud detection, client segmentation, personalized offers, risk modeling, client retention, etc. In particular, bank analysts are challenged to understand the behavior of companies that make large bank deposits and then transfer significant sums – to entities both inside and outside the bank’s network. They are also challenged by the limitation of relational and traditional BI tools to effectively model and analyze the money flows between a customer, its bank, and external 3rd parties. Banco Galicia has addressed this challenge by modeling money flows as a complex graph of transactions. The result is a powerful approach to support the analysis and visualization of money flows across a large network of bank-affiliated transactions. This session will desdescribe how Banco Galicia uses Oracle Big Data Spatial and Graph to understand the topology and behavior of money transfers.

Graph Modeling and Analysis for Complex Automotive Data Management
Mazda is an automotive manufacturer that routinely needs to link and analyze data from different sources like production, sales, inventory, and logistics. Most manufacturers use a bill of materials (BoM) to provide a master system for parts and their relationships. However, BoM developers have long realized the difficulties of modeling the complex relationships between components using a RDBMS. Moreover, BoM data must also align with master (or transaction) data from disparate IT systems. This paper highlights a novel approach to apply a graph database to create a flexible BoM of interconnected auto components. This system uses the property graph database and in-memory analytics in Oracle Spatial and Graph. We found the graph data model to be more effective at modeling, querying, and visualizing complex relationships in our data, while also integrating with different production systems. We will also share performance results of complicated pattern matching queries using PGQL._x000D_

Operationalizing Machine Learning
Most data science projects begin with data, “tools” and scripts but fail to get beyond the data scientist. They hit a wall when attempting to “operationalize” the models. Netflix never implemented the algorithm that won the Netflix $1 Million Challenge. This dichotomy between enterprise and algorithms is eliminated when algorithms are built into the data management platforms. By “moving algorithms to the data”, Oracle Database and Big Data Clouds are now data management and advanced analytical platforms. “Robots” can replicate human tasks by capturing best practices discovered in the data and automating that process using machine learning deployed models. Developers use SQL, R and Oracle Data Miner UI to build, evaluate and deploy advanced analytical methodologies. See how to go beyond “tools” to enabling RPA (robotic process automation) applications. Several Oracle “predictive” Applications will be shown as examples._x000D_

Construct a Public Security Data Analysis Engine Using Oracle Big Data Solution
Criminal analysis and prediction involves using many, varied data sources with various data formats. A city level public security department in China looked to Oracle's big data technologies to address their business requirements. We delivered this project to our customer using Oracle Database 11.2, Big Data Spatial and Graph 2.2, BIEE 12c, Data Visualization, Big Data Discovery 1.3.2 products.
We integrated various data including emergency call (911), demographic, hotel bookings, criminal records, live traffic, and other data sets, to perform accommodation analysis, criminal prediction analysis, correlation analysis, and operation efficiency dashboard and reporting. The property graph features in Big Data Spatial and Graph were key to performing these analytics, and the solution integrated Oracle's big data technology into one platform.

Serving Ireland's Authoritative Geospatial Data as Linked Data
Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) is Ireland's national mapping agency and is charged with managing authoritative geospatial information for the country. OSi has developed a complex relation database model to store this information called Prime2, using the Oracle 12c suite. To make some of this data more readily accessible to third parties, OSi has adopted Linked Data practices to do so. Through work between OSi and the ADAPT Centre in Trinity College Dublin, a Linked Data platform (data.geohive.ie) has been developed to publish this data. The platform currently relies on multiple tools for transforming relational data to RDF, storage, querying (GeoSPARQL over geospatial information), a Linked Data front-end and a back-end tool to reduce server load. The next design of the platform will utilise more functionality of the Oracle 12c suite to make access more efficient. This presentation will discuss how we worked with OSi to make available their Oracle based geospatial data as Linked Data.

Cloud Data Center, Infrastructure, Analytics and integration. Mind the gap!
There is a long list of products and services, but what do I need for Analytics? Is it just the Cloud service? Can I simply connect everything? Let's get to the bottom of this. Let’s get a holistic view on the infrastructure for hybrid cloud analytics. These topics are based on an onshore/offshore industry company moving it's analytics to the cloud, while having to deal with offshore locations as well.
This session will elaborate on how Analytics Cloud, RDC, VPN, GoldenGate, Data Integrator, ETL, FastConnect, Internet Exchanges, your ISP and datacenters are related to each other.
The case study is a datawarehouse and analytics platform in the Oracle Cloud connecting to on-premises sources. The analytics-to-the-cloud first approach is often a great start in the cloud, but at that time you need to think beyond running queries, offloading the ETL-load and moving BI users to the Cloud.
We will mind the gap and compare the upside and downside of different infrastructural approaches.

Publication of Statistical Linked Open Data in Japan with Oracle RDF graph
The National Statistics Center of Japan is responsible for managing and publishing a wide variety of national statistical data on its e-Stat portal site. The Center works with national and local agencies to make statistics widely accessible to government and the public. Inconsistent metadata definitions from the myriad of data sources made it difficult to align data semantics to support effective search and discovery.
To break through this problem, the Center developed a Linked Open Data
(LOD) platform in 2016, which publishes Japan statistics such as the population census and consumer price index.
This platform was built using the RDF graph capability in Oracle Database Spatial and Graph, and configured on Exadata and Oracle's SPARQL endpoint service.
To improve provisioning and manageability, the platform was migrated to the Oracle Public Cloud.
This move freed up limited resources to focus on developing new services, such as spatial search on sub-regional geometries using GeoSPARQL.

Discovering Tax Fraud in Florence, Italy with a Semantic Graph Database

One of the most cost-effective activities Italian town halls are supposed to carry out is tax evaders detection. That is why the city of Florence asked Evodevo to develop the Florence Fraud Detection System, a Decision Support System to help municipalities employees in automating the detection process.

The Florence Fraud Detection System consists of several databases merging into an Oracle 12c db with Spatial & Graph option with a description logic rules layer on top. The rules were derived from a study about the tax fraud domain in the specific section of Italian citizens resident abroad, in order to classify the citizens of Florence into different levels of suspiciousness. The system includes a Joseki SPARQL endpoint customization with pre-written semantic queries.

The session will consist of: an introduction to the context; a technical overview; a system demonstration.

Spark Streaming vs. Kafka Streams - two stream processing platforms compared
Independent of the source of data, the integration and analysis of event streams gets more important in the world of sensors, social media streams and Internet of Things. Events have to be accepted quickly and reliably, they have to be distributed and analyzed, often with many consumers or systems interested in all or part of the events. In this session we compare two popular Streaming Analytics solutions: Spark Streaming and Kafka Streams.
Spark is fast and general engine for large-scale data processing and has been designed to provide a more efficient alternative to Hadoop MapReduce. Spark Streaming brings Spark's language-integrated API to stream processing, letting you write streaming applications the same way you write batch jobs. It supports both Java and Scala.
Kafka Streams is the stream processing solution which is part of Kafka. It is provided as a Java library and by that can be easily integrated with any Java application.

Feedback from the business. Am I on the right path to customer success?
Measure Processes, Manage Feedback, Link to Process, Drill to detail, From Insight to Action…
You've heard of all this before, but it is hardly ever completely implemented. The steps from Insight to Action are hard to capture with Action Links as we try to do with Business Intelligence. But when you use the capabilities of platforms such as BICS and PCS the implementation and adjustments can be very easily accomplished. You can even empower your business users to adjust the solution themselves. Creating BPM / BAM / BI solutions can now be done with webbased tools only that appear like low-code solutions. Can you use this to empower the business to stay connected and stay on track with your ever changing environment?
We will set out a few steps to gather the right input and to stay flexible with your integrated Business solution. The demo includes integrations between BICS and PCS that are the cornerstones for digitally empowered business by using self service as the starting point.

A Cognitive Study on Data Visualization
With data volumes exploding and a greater variety of data available, business users want to explore more data and discover new insights that they can apply readily to improve business strategies, operations and customer engagement. With easier data exploration, users are seeking to increase the depth and frequency of their data analysis. This is a significant change because users who engage in analytics processes interact with data differently from what has been the norm with traditional BI.Rather than just consume data, they ask questions, try different views and approaches, build predictive models, and more.Supporting users’ forays into analytics is critical because it’s becoming clear in nearly every industry that organizations need to be more analytical to compete effectively.Visual analytics can help users become more productive with data by using software to integrate data analysis capabilities with modern, graphical ways of expressing information.Such technologies give users more power. This study that examines experiences with BI, visual analytics, and visual data discovery to uncover how organizations can move forward to make users more productive with data and use technologies to improve collaboration. This study explores where users are succeeding with BI and analytics and where visual analytics can improve their decisions. Currently, users are not fully satisfied with their ability to use visual analytics functionality. Training and education are needed to help them understand how to use visualization effectively and exploit new methods of data analysis.

Anomaly Detection in Medicare Provider Data using OAAgraph
Graph analysis is an effective methodology in data analysis which considers fine-grained relationships between data entities. This session presents an example of anomaly detection using graph analysis on data stored in Oracle Database with Oracle R Enterprise and the OAAgraph package, using a real-world public data set.
Specifically, we analyze the public information of medical transactions from CMS (United States Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services) for the year 2012. We load this data set as a graph into Oracle Database, and use the OAAgraph package to apply graph analysis algorithms whose results are be visualized using R's ggplot2 visualization package.
Our analysis successfully identifies suspicious records in the data set -- medical providers who perform procedures far from their specialties. We also discuss techniques how to reduce false positive outcomes.

Leveraging Analytics in Higher Education
Big data is still a trending topic in higher education and other industries. While understanding the importance of big data is critical, most universities are not leveraging the power of small data. Many data warehouse implementations in higher education fail as they only provide reports that do not aid in improving daily business functions. This session will highlight various technologies and strategies in incorporating data and analytics into the institutional culture. Business intelligence is not just getting sophisticated reports but being integrated into the applications that students, faculty, advisors, and staff use daily. Data and analytics should be used to drive processes and provide alerts when interventions are needed. This session will provide an overview of how Valdosta State University have integrated data into the academic and administrative functions of the university, leading to improved insight and value.

Analyzing Blockchain and Bitcoin Transaction Data as Graph
Blockchain technology and Bitcoin will potentially revolutionize business transactions. Blockchain offers a robust, decentralized platform for privacy and trust. It underlies the digital crypto-currency Bitcoin, which can be exchanged freely and anonymously, without a central authority. Bitcoin transactions - recorded publicly, and growing at a rate of 100,000's of transactions per day - provide an invaluable dataset to gain insight into the behavior of digital currency and the underlying Blockchain technology. Blocks, transactions with potential multiple inputs and outputs, and flow of bitcoins between addresses, form a sophisticated real-time graph. This talk details a pipeline used to gather bitcoin transaction data and analyze it with powerful graph cloud database technologies.

Analytic platform with a hybrid approach of home grown and vendor tools
Adopting any new technology is daunting, in addition to peer pressure, there is also a need to size up as data grows, all without breaking the bank. The original BIWA 2015 presentation was on how any IT shop can build a commodity Hadoop cluster with Dell servers, Redhat Linux, Infiband network cards and Cloudera HDFS. Most of the coding was in Java, and OLH (Oracle Loader for Hadoop) was used to load data into an Oracle 12c in-memory table (presented at OOW15). The expertise of Computer Science faculty, staff and students was used for the full project with vendor support. The group has since enhanced the cluster with SSD (Solid State Drives) and SPARK2, and written Python Spark Machine Learning code to  analyze Gigabyte size aircraft  logs. The visualization of the data using R-Oracle has been planned for the future.

Ingesting streaming data into Graph database
This talk presents the experience of a customer project where we built a stream-based ingestion into a graph database. It is one thing to load the graph first and then querying it. But it is another story if the data to be added to the graph is constantly streaming in, while querying it. Data is easy to add, if each single message ends up as a new vertex in the graph. But if a message consists of hierarchical information, it most often means creating multiple new vertices as well adding edges to connect this information. What if a node already exists in the graph? Do we create it again or do we rather add edges which link to the existing node? Creating multiple nodes for the same real-life entity is not the best choice, so we have to check for existence first. We end up requiring multiple operations against the graph, which demonstrated to be a bottle neck. This talk presents the implementation of an ingestion pipeline and the design choice we made to improve performance.

Pilot your Oracle Business Intelligence 12c Cloud Migration on Virtual Box
You know you need to get started on that Oracle Business Intelligence upgrade from 11g to 12c so you do a “lift and shift” to the cloud, but IT resources are tight, plus you’re not really sure how everything is going to fit together and you are going to have to wait for the Database and Server Administrators to get the environments set up. No problem, just use your laptop or PC to pilot the entire migration using Virtual Box and Sample Applications. In no time you will be up and running, using the migration and baseline validation tools, connecting to your real data, verifying dashboards and running reports in 12c. Once that is taken care of you can proceed to the cloud.
This is a case study of how Aleris International piloted its migration from OBIEE 11.1.1.7 to 12.2.1.1 using a laptop, Virtual Box and Sample applications for OBIEE.

Headache Due To Merger or Acquisition? Here's The Prescription for Financials
This session will describe a customer success story where the customer needed to quickly replace the budget/forecasting and financial reporting systems of a large business unit they had acquired (or they would face severe penalties). The customer is a large financial services company that is based in Jersey City, NJ (2.9bn annual revenues).

The customer chose to implement PBCS and BICS and have them run on Oracle DbaaS. Apps Associates performed the implementation and developed near real time integration across PBCS, BICS, EBS R12 and Workday. Apps Associates’ BICS Financial Accelerator was used to load data from EBS R12 into BICS/DbaaS and provide financial reporting. BICS was implemented as the single BI solution for all financial reporting and analysis - including drill down to detail.

The PBCS/BICS platform is now being rolled out to other areas of the organization.

Why IoT is the killer use case for AutoML
While AI/ML has matured enough to solve many real-world problems effectively, this process typically requires close interactions between three separate skill sets – the domain expert, the data scientist and the programmer. A typical IoT user is a line-of-business person such as a Plant Supervisor or a Fleet Manager. AutoML enables automatic selection of the most appropriate algorithm that suits the domain problem learned based on the interactions with domain expert. Also, AutoML automatically selects the hyper parameters and tunes the models without requiring data scientist skills. Furthermore, AutoML automates the repetitive analytics needed for retraining models warranted by the high velocity IoT data. Therefore, AutoML is the key enabler of analytics in the industrial IoT. Since the typical business benefits in IoT involve significant savings, IoT is the killer use case for AutoML. We will present how Oracle IoT Cloud applies AutoML for industrial IoT problems.

Measuring Published Citation using Graph Modeling and Analysis
Research organizations, along with their funding agencies, routinely need to measure the performance of their organization. The application of scientific citation indexing is a widely used metric for evaluating the success of a research organization. This paper highlights the novel use of graph modeling, analytics and visualization to improve this metric of scientific performance. Our approach models an index of published scientific publication and citations as a connected graph. We used the Oracle in-memory graph analytics engine (PGX) to carry out graph analysis, statistical inferencing, and visual exploratory analysis. Our results illustrate how these graph modeling combined with statistical analysis, such as stochastic block model (SBM), can improve the measurement and evaluation of scientific research.

How Search Augments Analytics
Traditional Business intelligence (BI) has delivered a great value to organizations, enabling them to better data-based decision making. However, today the speed to make business decisions has outpaced the traditional BI's ability to adapt and answer quickly new questions.

In this talk we introduce a very powerful engine like Apache Solr and demonstrate how easy it is to set it up and start getting answers right away. Since a picture is better than a thousand words we will also introduce Banana (a fork of Kibana) as its graphical front end for data analysis.

Finally, We will also discuss about Solr Analytics 2.0 which, provides the ability to search on live data perfectly complementing the use of a traditional data warehouse database.

Using GeoJSON in the Oracle Database
Location and other geographical information is traditionally stored in Oracle databases using specialized data types, such as the SDO_GEOMETRY type. That data type is powerful and flexible, but can be difficult to use. A modern alternative is to use a JSON-based encoding, called GeoJSON instead. GeoJSON is a lightweight format suited to data exchange and transfer, popular for reading and publishing spatial data on the Web, in Big Data, and for the Internet of Things.

This session will explain the way GeoJSON encodes a variety of geographical objects, from simple points to complex multi-polygonal structures. It will also explain how those structures can be indexesd, and how they can be used in spatial analytics, in isolation or in conjunction with classic SDO_GEOMETRY types.
Finally we will show how the GeoJSON objects can be displayed on a map.
