Path to Data Architect: Hadoop, Spark, Flink, and Beam Explained to Oracle DBAs
Big Data is growing exponentially, requiring massive-scale infrastructure however, business analytics has shifted from reactive to proactive analysis; this is the era of streaming data (a.k.a. Fast Data). Apache Hadoop is very good for analyzing data at rest but cannot handle streaming data.
Big Data analytics needs new Big data frameworks. Apache Spark brings in-memory processing and RDD data abstraction which allow real-time processing of streaming data however its micro batch architecture incurs high latency. Apache Flink brings low latency and could address Spark limitations however it is not as mature and largely adopted as Spark.
Apache Beam promotes its portable Beam model across Big data frameworks (Spark, Flink, Dataflow).
Tis session presents and overview of the major Big Data frameworks and suggests that DBA should embrace these frameworks and expand their skills as a necessary path to becoming Data Architects.

Architecting for Analytics
This session answers architecture questions related to the overall structure and strategy for an enterprise analytics system. How do we design a data warehouse for analytics purposes? What do we integrate into a central warehouse or maintain in separate data marts? How do we integrate long term storage systems that we need to query only occasionally? Data lakes? Big Data?? What are the tradeoffs with different tools and how much do we invest in custom code? How do we integrate real-time data streaming? What ETL and integration strategies are we going to use? Where and how do we extend our raw data with calculated measures and analytic functions? How do we create a system that has a strong foundation, but can grow and evolve over time? This presentation will draw from real-world data architecture projects that were designed with analytics in mind.

Move Data between Apache Hadoop and Oracle Database for Customer 360 Analytics
Customer 360 degree views require data from a variety of streaming sources to be integrated with data stored in Big Data systems and databases. Machine learning and analytics applications need access to mobile device feeds, online community logs, social media feeds, and much more, along with business critical data stored in the database. Tools for data movement between streaming data sources, Big Data platforms and Oracle Databases are essential. In this session, learn about tools that move data between these systems, using technology such as Hive storage handlers for Kafka, direct path load, SQL, and custom Hive SerDes. We will step through using these tools to work with Streaming data (Kafka), Big Data, and Database services in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

3D Spatial Utility Database at CALTRANS
The California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) was awarded a federal grant to create a spatial database for the purpose of collecting utility data and locations. Oracle 12c was chosen as the spatial database software and Bentley Map Enterprise V8i (SELECTseries4) was chosen as the software to interface with Oracle 12c. Autodesk Civil 3D and Arc GIS will eventually link to the database.
The multitenant architecture of Oracle 12c is being utilized; pluggable databases were created to separate data by CA Coordinate Systems (CCS). Within the pluggable database, tablespaces were created to separate the CCS zones.
It is essential that 3D geometry is stored and the Spatial Reference System Identifier (SRID) value be assigned to the Oracle geometry so that coordinates can be re-projected from one coordinate system to another. Compound Coordinate Systems were created.
Creating and maintaining a utility database with a standardized set of data attributes will ensure that the utility infrastructure can be accurately identified during project planning and for conflict resolution during design and construction. This system can easily be adapted to other disciplines.

18c Spatial New Features Update
With the Oracle Database 18c release, Oracle Spatial and Graph brings new performance and usability features across the board to complement features introduced in Oracle Database 12c Release 2. This release also makes it easy to develop spatial applications in Oracle Cloud. Spatial now supports distributed transactions, making it easy to develop web applications that update spatial data.  More geometry types can be converted between SDO_GEOMETRY and JSON formats, and Oracle REST Data Services supports spatial queries.  Sharding support (introduced in 12.2) is now extended to spatial tables and indexes. Web services are enhanced to support multiple data sources so that a single web service instance can serve data from different database schemas, and CSW 2.0.2 ISO metadata application profiles are supported. GeoRaster now supports many GDAL functions via external procedures.
Learn what’s new with the leading spatial platform that’s fast, cloud-ready, and developer-friendly.

BRIO Migration at The University of Pittsburgh - Scaling New Heights in BI
The University of Pittsburgh's CFO Office faced the pending retirement of the Hyperion BRIO query tool and chose a path to migrate to Oracle's OBIEE platform that resulted in better query performance, a common data model with shared calculations, and greater user engagement in self-service analysis. This session will recap the timeline of events that helped to transition UPitt to a modern BI platform using OBIEE. We will address the challenges that are typically faced in migrating users from a product that they are comfortable with in order to provide a more robust reporting environment. Leveraging Analytics in Higher Education
Big data is still a trending topic in higher education and other industries. While understanding the importance of big data is critical, most universities are not leveraging the power of small data. Many data warehouse implementations in higher education fail as they only provide reports that do not aid in improving daily business functions. This session will highlight various technologies and strategies in incorporating data and analytics into the institutional culture. Business intelligence is not just getting sophisticated reports but being integrated into the applications that students, faculty, advisors, and staff use daily. Data and analytics should be used to drive processes and provide alerts when interventions are needed. Fighting supply chain risks with Blockchain and IoT
Modern global supply chains are highly complex ecosystems. Despite decades of innovations to streamline and optimize operations, companies still consistently face challenges with end-to-end visibility, product tracking, bootlegging, fraud, compliance, safety, and delivery speed. Supply chain-related crimes and disruptions cost companies billions of dollars annually across the globe.

This session showcases how blockchain, IoT and machine learning can be harnessed to fight some of the key supply chain risks and challenges of today.  When implemented right, this solution improves customer trust, minimizes losses and optimizes end to end operations. The session will cover the use cases, technical architecture and implementation considerations.
