In the Cloud managed Data Warehouse services are still rare. Amazon Red Shift and Snowflake are examples of new contenders in the market place. At Oracle Open World Larry Ellison announced the Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse Cloud service (ADWC). It shall become available at the turn of the calendar year as a fully managed DWH service, running on Exadata hardware.

sumIT took part in a preview programme in summer and autumn of 2017 and has gained insights and experience with the new service. In this presentation those experiences will be shared with the audience. Key features of the service, like its ease of provisioning, use, and interfacing other systems and clouds will be presented and also demonstrated.

Lessons learned will be told, the services sweet spot and limits be discussed. Moreover, AWDC will be compared to other managed DWH cloud services. This will illustrate the advantages AWDC gives customers, but will also help identify room for improvement in future AWDC versions.

One of the biggest ongoing discussion points, and in fact a key decision factor to be bedded down prior to implementing a BI, Analytics application is whether it should be implemented as an on premises system, or as a cloud solution. We have come fairly quickly from a place where we had hardware on raised pallets in dark corners of basement floors. By contrast, we are now in the place where as far as possible, the business attempts to give the individual user access to self-served information on their personal device, at any time. The analogy I often use for this is one where my Grandfather one day clung to one end of a firmly planted Tulip and said to me; “ Look how strong I am, I have the world on the other end of this!” The internet used to be the domain of the few, and now it is almost impossible for an individual to function without it. In this discussion I will cover some fairly weighty topics, but in plain ‘ol English! This discussion is for Senior Executives in Finance or IT.

Serverless architecture (or function as a service, FaaS) is THE new trend in the cloud. It’s an often used, highly efficient, well established technology and common building block in all major public clouds. Did I mention it typically saves 2 orders of magnitude of IT spending?
This session is about technology and clouds first of all. You don’t have to be an expert to attend it. It brings you up to date and gives an overview of serverless computing technology, Function as a Service and the Fn Project which was open sourced recently at Java One 2017. 
Fn Project is the Oracle driven, open source FaaS framework with Docker as the only dependency. Fn Project can run on premises as well as in all clouds and allow interesting use cases for Machine Learning / AI.

In addition, we will go over the Exadata Features available to you on the service to launch your analytics into overdrive. Other topics covered will be Exadata smart software features such as smart scans, storage indexes and HCC. Also databases options to help with analytics such as in-memory. Live demos of the service will also be used as examples in each of the topics covered.

This is a real world use case from Grupo Bimbo, a 15B$ 32-country FMCG enterprise, where we present (a) how to create a Data lake on DBCS (a PaaS offering) from a SaaS application like Oracle ERP Fusion and (b) how to automate the extraction from Fusion, Ingestion into Data Lake both with full and incremental load and (c) performing advanced analytics in BDCS to support cross-functional analysis spanning multiple countries and products. Attendees will learn step-by-step how to achieve this – a must requirement from a load of Oracle Cloud SaaS customer.
