Big Data Analytics requires unstructured data (a.k.a. Big Data) but also Master data generally stored in RDBMS tables.

Apache Spark furnishes the Spark SQL interface for querying unstructured data using SQL. This interface provisions the Datasource API with a JDBC interface for accessing relational databases. How to join RDBMS tables with Big data using Spark SQL without moving data over?

This session describes an implementation of the Spark Datasource API and explains the optimizations that (i) allow parallel and direct access to the RDBMS database (with the option of controlling the number of concurrent connections); (ii) introspect the RDBMS table, generate partitions of Spark JDBCRDDs based on the split pattern and rewrite Spark SQL queries into the RDBMS SQL; (iii) use hooks in the JDBC driver for faster type conversions; (iv) push down predicates to the RDBMS, prune partitions based on the where clause to reduce the amount of data returned to the RDBMS.

Oracle Database In-Memory introduces a new in-memory columnar format that is compatible with all existing applications. Join Oracle Product Management to learn in detail what motivated Oracle to develop this new technology and how it works alongside the traditional row format to provide a unique “dual format” architecture. This session will explore how Database In-Memory enables "Real-Time Analytics" by allowing analytic style queries to be run directly on source data. It will also explore the key performance enhancing features of Database In-Memory including in-memory scans, predicate push down, hash joins with bloom filters, vector group by aggregation, and new high-performance features like In-Memory Expressions and Join Groups. The session will conclude by exploring how the new in-memory functionality interacts with key database performance features such as Real Application Clusters (RAC), Partitioning, parallel execution, and much more.

In this presentation, Gary Crisci, Principal Data & Information Architect/Oracle Ace and Shyam Nath, Director-IoT, will walk you through GE’s Predix platform; a cloud based solution that can capture industrial data for various Edge devices. We will discuss scenarios for utilizing this valuable information, including how you get it in the hands of the people who need it, and into a tool that allows them to use the information to make better decisions.

We will illustrate how we capture industrial data from sensors using GE’s Predix cloud platform to determine leading indicators of when large maintenance events are likely to be due and what will be the nature of the maintenance required. We will then demonstrate how to transfer the data into Oracle PBCS for Planning and Budgeting purposes.

As early as 2001 Enterprise Data Warehousing (EDW) design patterns like "Corporate Information Factory" (CIF) began to emerge. Theses patterns established EDW as the central focus of reporting. Current BI/DW 1.0 projects still follow these patterns today. Problems in the BI/DW 1.0 methodology have appeared. Increases in data volume, variety and velocity have all created considerable challenges for this legacy architecture. In this presentation we will review the legacy of BI/DW 1.0 and dive into the future BI/DW 2.0 and 3.0 architectures. Taking a close look and advanced staging areas, operational data stores and how those architectures can be used for cloud facilitation in BI/DW 2.0. Additionally, this presentation will drive into the BI/DW 3.0 data tipping point and where various Oracle products fit in these new emerging modern data architectures.

The University of Pittsburgh's CFO Office faced the pending retirement of the Hyperion BRIO query tool and chose a path to migrate to Oracle's OBIEE platform that resulted in better query performance, a common data model with shared calculations, and greater user engagement in self-service analysis. This session will recap the timeline of events that helped to transition UPitt to a modern BI platform using OBIEE. We will address the challenges that are typically faced in migrating users from a product that they are comfortable with in order to provide a more robust reporting environment. A review of BRIO to OBIEE feature comparisons and data model enhancements will be covered.

Serverless architecture (or function as a service, FaaS) is THE new trend in the cloud. It’s an often used, highly efficient, well established technology and common building block in all major public clouds. Did I mention it typically saves 2 orders of magnitude of IT spending?
This session is about technology and clouds first of all. You don’t have to be an expert to attend it. It brings you up to date and gives an overview of serverless computing technology, Function as a Service and the Fn Project which was open sourced recently at Java One 2017. 
Fn Project is the Oracle driven, open source FaaS framework with Docker as the only dependency. Fn Project can run on premises as well as in all clouds and allow interesting use cases for Machine Learning / AI.

Independent of the source of data, the integration and analysis of event streams gets more important in the world of sensors, social media streams and Internet of Things. Events have to be accepted quickly and reliably, they have to be distributed and analyzed, often with many consumers or systems interested in all or part of the events. In this session we compare two popular Streaming Analytics solutions: Spark Streaming and Kafka Streams.
Spark is fast and general engine for large-scale data processing and has been designed to provide a more efficient alternative to Hadoop MapReduce. Spark Streaming brings Spark's language-integrated API to stream processing, letting you write streaming applications the same way you write batch jobs. It supports both Java and Scala. 
Kafka Streams is the stream processing solution which is part of Kafka. It is provided as a Java library and by that can be easily integrated with any Java application.

So you want to use Oracle Business Intelligence but your organization doesn't have an Oracle Database, or maybe you do but most of your data sources are stored in a warehouse such as Redshift or Snowflake.

At first glance it might seem that Oracle BI is no longer an option, but don't worry -- it is. In this presentation, we'll guide the audience through the nuanced complexity faced when installing a JDBC Driver for the purpose of connecting Oracle Business Intelligence to a database that isn't Oracle. While we use Redshift as an example, the shared insights will be helpful for anyone connecting Oracle BI to any warehouse or database.
